Get in line

by SCOTT SEE

First of all, let me say that good ol’ Mr. Scruff came through in the end with a scorching set at SAT last Saturday night. With a four-hour stint that went everywhere from reggae to broken beat, I think everyone in the place was happy. Everyone except the poor souls who had to wait outside in the freezing cold, that is. Gotta mention the apparent disorganization at the door, with guest list, ticket-holders and pay-at-the-door people all lumped into one bloody line and no one at the door to do damage control! I watched the doorman tell some of the people who were promoting the show that they had to get in line, while I was doing my 40-minute bid in the cold, I might add. Minor hassles, but like I said, all was forgotten once inside.

This Thursday, you can roll into Sona and wish les Architeks MC and producer Stratege a happy birthday while dipping your toes in the open bar till 1 a.m. You can also check out the new video for “Rendez-vous à l’open bar” while DJs Ray Ray, Sherlock and 13ieme warm up the place. Happy b-day, Jim!

The Butta Babees finished shooting the video for “U Don’t Want It” just last week, and are gearing up for a show on Friday, Nov. 22, at Club One. Joining the BBs are Technical Sense, who have a CD coming out called The Sense to da Street (www.cesoul.com), and Nine Planets, who also just dropped a new video and 12” for “Rugged Raw” featuring DJ Grouch (www.nineplanetshiphop.com). DJs for the evening will consist of Goser, Cap3 and Mystic, hosted under the keen eyes of Peaches and Blaster.

Had a nice chat with K-OS the other day. He’s on the road touring with India Arie and Slum Village, and will be rolling into town in December for a big show at the Bell Centre—or is it the Gillette Centre? Who knows, but it should be a big show. He was telling me about their show in Nashville, and how he felt like people there were actually ready for his acoustic approach, them being all country an’ all. His debut album, released earlier this year in Canada on EMI, was just picked up by Astralwerks in the States, where he gets to release it all over again. Let’s hope they’re ready for him, ’cause I know damn well that he’s ready for them.:

Seven reasons I can’t explain:
1. Osunlade “Touch My Soul” 12” (Set)
2. Focus Sweet and Sour (Versatile)
3. Ms. Jade “Jade’s the Champ” (Beat Club)
4. Gangstarr “Skills” 12” (Virgin)
5. MF Doom “All Outta Ale” 12” (Nature Sounds)
6. Quantic “Search the Heavens” (Tru-Thoughts)
7. Raphael Saadiq “You’re the One That I Like” (Universal)
