The Suzuki method |
|
by RAF KATIGBAK I don’t know about the rest of you party people, but for me, this year’s Halloween was quite the bender, featuring three solid days of clubs, loft parties and white dudes in bad afro wigs. For those of you who didn’t make it out to the 2 Many DJs party at the SAT, I’m sorry to say you missed one hell of a set (it’s not often you hear House of Pain, Vitalic, Salt-N-Pepa and Fischerspooner all in one party rockin’ place). Although the crowd was lukewarm, the Belgian brothers managed to heat it up and keep people dancing way past 3 a.m. (they were so good, one dude even climbed up and/or humped the speaker!). Needless to say, this weekend’s almost a write-off for me, seeing as it’s already mid-week and I’m still drunk and/or high from last Thursday. Fortunately (or rather, unfortunately) there’s a load of fun stuff to do this weekend, so here’s the skinny. David Suzuki is giving a talk at 7 p.m. tonight, Thursday, Nov. 7, at Théâtre Maisonneuve for the Montreal stop of his Human Element Tour. There are three reasons you might want to check this out. A) if your brain is as mush as mine is from last weekend, listening to an old Asian dude talk is probably the most you can handle right now, B) the guy really knows his shit and C) he’s rumoured to be spinning an 8-hour set on five turntables! Tix are about 30 bones and all proceeds go to the David Suzuki Foundation. Speaking of dropping science, tonight, drop by BeBops lounge (ex-Jai Bar) where the Broken Krew’s Melon will be throwing down alongside Somsay. Expect to funkatize your thighz as these guyz are guaranteed to burn off some of those pumpkin piez. Next Monday, Nov. 11, drop by Café Campus as Paradoxe Productions will be putting on a show to promote their second annual musical contest (sponsored by HipHop4Ever). Headlining the show will be the winners of last year’s contest, the jazz/rock/rap project Sculture du Son. Guests for the evening will also include Latitude Nord, Chafiik (Loco Locass), Seba (poet/rapper) and Hermese (reggae/rap). There will be a press conference from 6 to 8 p.m., followed by a sculpture/electro music performance. The main event begins at 9 p.m. Also starting next week is the VAV Gallery’s K7 event, a five-day sonic showcase featuring sounds from Montreal and abroad. The event consists of an hour-long deep listening presentation by a different guest curator each day. Confirmed so far are Tasman Richardson (famefame.com, Toronto), Gordon Allen (technot.ca, Montreal/Toronto) Alexandre Lemieux (2hqd, Montreal), Aaron McConomy (intr_version.com) and Brian Damage (Total Zero). The address is 1395 René-Lévèsque W., call 848-7388 for details. Finally, amidst the rumours and speculations of buy-outs and shut-downs that have been swirling around clubland, Stereo has officially announced that it’s closing its doors at the end of the month and re-opening December 21. More on that to come. : Tomb it may concern… (last one I promise!) Diskoakimbo@sympatico.ca |
