Happy belated!

by SCOTT SEE

Just wanted to let everybody who didn’t show up at the Sugarman 3 show last week at la Sala Rossa know that they missed out on some A-1 funk business. Although the crowd that turned up weighed in at only slightly over 100 people, it definitely got hot up inside there real quick. Just remember that the name Daptone Records ensures the highest quality of real funk music, and you’ll never miss another show. I hear the Queen of Funk, Sharon Jones, will be making her way back to Montreal soon enough, so keep your ears open.

Damn! Heard the B-side of DJ Suganeedlz’s upcoming release with Poison Pen and said a silent prayer for all MCs and producers in the vicinity. Watch out! This girl done wrecked all creation with the A-side and now backs it up with a tight and solid flip. I know I should just shut up until it drops, but she won’t even give me a copy on CD until it’s mastered! Damn perfectionists. Snatch this one if you know what’s good for you though, ’cause you’ll need a copy to study from when you’re changing up your whole style. I ain’t lyin’!

Had a nice chat with DJ and photographer about town Stephane Cocke the other day, and learned that he and his keen ability to sniff a winner are gearing up to put out a compilation of downtempo selections in the near future. If you have any tracks that you feel need to be heard—instrumental, vocal or otherwise—please e-mail me so that I can hook you up with a guy who knows how to pick ’em.

The Grill pulls yet another guest tonight, Thusday, Oct. 31, with Londoner DJ Peter Vickerman in town to play an early set (10 p.m. to midnight) of rare funk 45s and dancefloor jazz for the kids. Never heard of this bloke, but that don’t say much considering he’s probably never heard of me either. That’s at Blizzarts if you were wondering.

I also wanted to bring to your attention not one, but two belated birthday wishes to two very good friends of mine who became old overnight. Best wishes and congratulations go out to both Sharon McGoogan and Simon Briscoe, who will always be older than me. :

Seven reasons things happen the way they do:
1. Raphael Saadiq “You’re the One That I Like” (Universal)
2. Various “No Agreement” (RedHot/MCA)
3. Skhool Yard “Days of Our Lives” (Threshold)
4. Joe McDuphery Experience “Parallel Worlds” (Stones Throw)
5. No I.D. “Fate or Destiny” (All Natural)
6. Cinematic Orchestra “Evolution II” 12” (Ninja Tune)
7. Jazzanova “Another New Day” Stereolab mix 12” (JCR)
