Big Tory on campus

>> Progressive Conservative McGill pres tries to revamp a creaking party

by CHRIS BARRY

Name: Kevin McPhee

Nickname: McFly

Age: 23

Occupation: President of PC McGill

Bio: This charming, intelligent and well-mannered McGill Ghetto resident has been involved with the federal Progressive Conservative party since the tender age of 10. The son of a politically active Nova Scotia Tory and a “lazy” Roman Catholic, Kevin is in his last year of a mechanical engineering degree and hopes to get accepted into law school next fall.

Is it a lonely job trying to convince Quebec youth that the Progressive Conservatives are a hip, relevant political party tailor-made for them? No, and certainly not as lonely as it is for the Canadian Alliance campus rep.

Are there a lot of creative arts students signed up with PC McGill? Not really.

Is it a challenge overcoming the stereotype of the Tory, lounging around the United Services Club, sipping port and discussing how wonderful the old rail barons used to be? “Well, that’s one of the things that we’re trying to do something about. We joke about it a lot but at the same time, you know, a lot of us enjoy sipping on port or what have you. The stereotype is true to a certain extent so you can’t really hold it against people.”

Brian Mulroney: hero or villain? “Most of us young PCs love Mulroney.”

Is that because they are too young to remember life before the GST, or the days when Canada resembled an actual country as opposed to a U.S. client state? Not at all.

Something he is trying to do more of this year: Draft policy for the PCs.

One policy issue he is quite concerned about: The environment.

Is his concern for the environment rooted in a fear that environmental protection measures might have a negative effect on the profits of his big business masters? Of course not. “And I support the Kyoto Accord. Now let’s just come up with some ideas on how we can implement Kyoto so it will make it a little easier for everyone to swallow.”

Is PC McGill a good place to meet chicks? Not especially.

Do chicks automatically equate young PC dudes as exciting, adventurous lovers and forever try to lure them into the bedroom? Not really.

Does he have any political aspirations? Yes, to one day run for Parliament.

Childhood ambition: To become Prime Minister of Canada.

Long-term ambition: To become Prime Minister of Canada. “Although I don’t know how realistic it is. But it would be a great job. Being able to represent your colleagues at that level would be amazing.”

Preferred newspaper: The Globe and Mail.

Where you might find him boozin’ or holding political discussions: Gert’s.

Favourite alcoholic beverage: Alexander Keith’s.

Last book read: The Future of Capitalism, by Lester C. Thurow.

Musical tastes: Not a big music fan, he generally just listens to the radio, Mix 96 and Q92.

A recent film he liked: Igby Goes Down.

Television preferences: The West Wing, Law & Order.

Words of wisdom: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” :
