Rocktoberfests

by RAF KATIGBAK

Joey BeltramSona just announced their line-up for their Freaky weekend party (Oct. 25–26) and it looks like a doozy for you techno fans. How’s this for a line-up: Chicago tech-meister Angel Alanis, New York’s Joey Beltram and Low End Specialists, and former DMC champ DJ Rectangle! Booyah!

The Black and Blue crew has also revealed the guests for the next installment, slotted for Oct. 13. On hand will be London’s DJ Paulette, Miami’s Tracy Young, Tom Stephan and of course, Mark Anthony. Expect the same wonderfully cheesy music in an extravagant and well-worth-it party atmosphere.

This Saturday, Oct. 5, Aria’s bringing back my man Derrick Carter. Granted his last visit was only “really awesome” as opposed to his previous “mind-blowingly good/bend-me-over-and-teach-me-a-lesson” gig, but word has it this time he’s got a few secret tricks and bomb tracks up his sleeve, so don’t miss it!

You might want to drop by the Quartier Latin pub first, this Saturday, to check out the inauguration of Invisible Airlines featuring DJ Element. The concept is simple—for every hour there will be a musical charter to a different city (New-York, Rio de Janeiro, London, New Delhi, Johannesburg, Berlin) in which Element will play music that is either from or influenced by that city. That’s six solid hours of Element! So take off, eh! (Attention! They will have stewardesses there! Repeat: They will have stewardesses!)

Tonight, Oct. 3 (and every other first Thursday of the month), drop by Newtown for Colourful, a “gay friendly” event featuring the happy house sound of DJ Jester and Stéfane Lippé with a special live performance by Stereomovers’ Nancy L. Add to that acrobatic performance and drink specials all night and you’ve got yourself a party. All for only six bucks!

This Wednesday, Oct. 9, it’s time to wish the Broken Crew at Blue Dog a happy second birthday. On hand will be residents D Kai, Poontz, Melon, Sase One and Slyde, so get there and get wasted on their new drink specials in a funky breaky stylee. Have your cake and eat it too!

On the D&B tip, drop by Static Wednesday at Exit, where residents Stabba and Spinal will host U.K. drum & bass collective Cause 4 Concern. These London boys have been dropping some huge choons lately, so don’t sleep! It’s a tenner at the door, with a free drink.

Add to all that the fact that minimalist electro ex-pat funkateer Taylor Savvy has been recently added to the next week’s already massive Electroclash line-up, and I’m freaking out! :

Dammit, Jim, I’m a DJ, not a jukebox! Diskoakimbo@sympatico.ca
