Much to my relief, they are now releasing the first season of Mary Tyler Moore on DVD, which hits vid shelves this week. To my relief, because that means every other season will inevitably follow. Thank God for this new technology!

Actually, while the first season has its moments (Mary and Rhoda attending a club for divorced people is a standout, as well as Nancy Walker’s first appearance ever as Rhoda’s mom Ida), the show was in its infancy and often showed it. Some of the plots were simply silly, and while watching you’ll be left, as I was, looking forward to watching shows made later in the series’ evolution. Mary’s visit to the dentist offers a bunch of rather routine laughs, a sense of routine that was soon mercifully left far, far behind in the second season. Still, the seeds were set here for many a staple, like Mary’s bad dates and even worse parties.

But there are bits of trivia included on the DVD. Packed in are the lyrics to the theme song. Reading these led to a stunning revelation for me. You know the bit that goes, “You can never tell/why don’t you take it”? According to this DVD set, it’s actually, “You can have a town/why don’t you take it.” Isn’t that insane? :
