John Coltrane Legacy (Impulse/Universal) A four-CD set culled from material recorded over a 10-year period for Prestige, Blue Note, Atlantic and Impulse. A great introduction to this influential jazz giant. 9.5 (LD) Elmore James Dust My Broom (Tomato/Fusion III) This is so good I am peeing myself as I write this. The extensive liner notes alone are worth the price of admission. 9.5 (JC) Latex Replique (Mueller/Fusion III) Excellent, dark, melodic electro/synth-pop from the genius who brought you Steril. 9 (RK) Dust A Dirt Track Odyssey (Bar de Lune/Fusion III) Herbaliser’s brass detour into—get this—splendorous, soft-focus, jangle-twang prog-pop. Unexpected, and appreciated. 8.5 (RB) Operation Makeout Hang Loose (Mint/Outside) Difficult co-eds barely dodge detention by playing hooky with uptight, lo-fi punk. 7.5 (LC) At 3810 St-Laurent, Fri., Sept. 27 Slum Village “Tainted” remix 12” (white) T3 gets lazy and works J.B.’s “Payback” into a Slumified banger that I’ll hate in two weeks. 7.5 (SC) Voyce Summer Day EP (CDR) Movement on the MTL R&B front? Voyce and producer Mad-I-Son are building as we speak. 7 (SC) >> Music Listings |
