Homegrown beets

by SCOTT C

Looks like the first installment of Beets From the Backyard Garden has finally decided on a date. On Monday, Sept. 23, you can make your way down to Blizzarts where a bunch of Montreal’s hip hop producer hacks will be showing off their newest bangers to the delight of onlookers and potential collaborators. Invited hacks who will be showcased that night will include Sixtoo, Y.R.D.M, Simahlak, So-Called and myself, who will be playing beats from midnight till 2 a.m. Others interested in participating will play from 10 p.m. till midnight. All interested parties should show up around 8 p.m. when our beloved MOOG Audio specialist Kano will be encoding all beats to MP3 format to use with the new Final Scratch vinyl interface. This is some wicked software that allows MP3s to be manipulated like you were actually playing a piece of vinyl. Oh, the technology! Be there, ’cause it’s free.

If you’re gonna be in NDG this week, you might want to poke your head in the door at Alena, a new graphics-oriented skate shop that’s opened at 5662 Sherbrooke W. On Friday, Sept. 20, Alena hosts the launch of M: Graphics From the Scrapbook, the third book produced by Marok, the editor of German skate-culture magazine Lodown. The launch wouldn’t be complete with out the boys from Heavyweight Art Installations setting up for some live painting, as well as a special appearance by DJ P-Love. All this goes on from 7 p.m to 10 p.m. at the store.

What can I say. It’s a shame that neither of the big shows that were supposed to go down last weekend ever materialized. I’m talking about J-Live and the Stones Throw showcase, both of which got tied up in complete and utter foolishness. I wouldn’t be surprised if they wrote Montreal off all together, but I hope that’s not the case. Anyway, let’s start looking towards the future, and see if we can make shit pop again in this city. We deserve it, don’t we? Damn right. If you have a plan, write it on a plain, white piece of paper and send it to:
