Have I got a Dilla for you…

by SCOTT C

Friday, Sept. 13, is a lucky one this time—after Antibalas and/or J-Live, there’s still the after party, as of midnight at a Chinatown loft, with New Zealand MC Recloose plus locals P-Love, Simon B., jojoflores, Troubleman and Raj Hungund spinning. Specifics are at www.makemedia.ca

On Thursday, Sept. 19, you may want to head down to la Sala Rossa if you’re into reggae and African music, because they’ve definitely got something for you. Calabash Productions presents Shine, an event aimed at showing the power of art and music as a tool for social change. On the bill that evening are Ahmadou Ngom and friends mixing West African and Haitian percussion, Kali from Kali & Dub and the Ark of Infinity band.

The DJ line-up consists of Kani, J.D, (Bhum Bhum Time, CKUT 90.3FM), and Ms. B (whatup, B!) from Champion Sounds at Blizzarts, taking you home with a mix of pan-African music, conscious reggae, dub and dancehall styles. Tix are $8 in advance and $10 at the door. There’s food, too, so get there early!
Last week, I got a note from a friend of mine telling me that Detroit’s own production machine Jay Dee, aka J Dilla (Slum Village, ATCQ, D’Angelo, Busta Rhymes etc.), was scheduled for a Sept. 27 date to DJ at a club in Toronto (Fez Batik, if you’re interested). Faster than you can say “Big Booty Express,” I was trying to get my man a Montreal date as well. Made all the connections, got the right people on the phone, and got the okay for a booking on Sept. 28, only to find out that J Dilla wanted my arms and legs, as well as my two firstborn children, as payment for his presence (not to mention three hotel rooms). In other words, he ain’t coming. It’s alright, though. I’ll get him soon enough. This is far from over. :

Seven reasons I’m a marked man:
1. Al Green “Simply Beautiful” (Stax)
2. Johnny Otis “Country Girl” (EMI)
3. Dwele “Too Fly” (CDR)
4. Fred Everything & the Jazz Twit “Sobeck/Lens Groove” 12” (Shaboom)
5. Vikter Duplaix “I Got You” (CDR)
6. Jazzanova “L.O.V.E. and You and I” (JCR)
7. Ty “We Don’t Care” (Ninja test)

I’m looking from a rookie...
