Mean green

by RAF KATIGBAK

Last night a little green bottle labelled Jagermeister was like the green-skinned chick on Star Trek—irresistible and probably not very good for my liver. Due to a night of ’90s dance hits and many rounds of these Orion-slave-girl drinks, my witty-banter-o-meter is reading “low” so let’s jump right into it.

Tonight, Thursday, Sept. 12 drop by the Theatre Plaza (6505 St-Hubert) as they continue fundraising efforts for the restoration of the beautiful cinema. This time it’s a night of electro with the Back ’n’ Forth event featuring Soundshaper, db and Jordan Dare in the main room. Drop by from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. for a live painting expo by artist Christian Corvellec, with beats by the Penguin Brothers.

Alas, tonight, we must bid a fond farewell as Level 4 Productions announces the grand finale of Tekstyle Thursday at Blue Dog. It’s been exactly one year that the weekly techno gig has been pounding out quality beats on the Main. The final Tekstyle bonanza will feature Aria resident Preach alongside other Tekstylerz like Toltech, Simmetrik aka Simon G, Kilobyte and Freebass with residents Kidstatik and Sarcastic. Be sure to come out and say goodbye by dancing your ass off.

Sept. 13, join the Broken Crew’s Dkai as he puts together a Friday-night shindig at Stereo. On the bill will be Dkai, Montreal’s Big Al and special breaks/progressive guest DJ all the way from the U.K., Jonathan Lisle. If you’re into breaks, come out, support the scene and check out the guy who has Sasha & Digweed soiling their undergarments. There will be plenty of mix CD giveaways and a special “live visual painting” show by Broken Crew’s Rhys “on a big fuckin’ canvas.” Don’t miss it!

Also on the “urban tip,” Exit will be starting a new drum & bass/hip hop night on Wednesday, Sept. 18. Join Spinal and Stabba in the main room and DR. One & Buck Rogers, Kidd & Goldenchild and D-Shade upstairs as they take a detour from the regular four-on-the-floor fare the club has been known for. A breaking showcase by Tactical Crew and beatbox performance by BDS round out the evening. Six dollars gets you in with a free drink before 12:30 a.m.

Starting this Monday, experimental music fans will have a lot to scratch their chins about as the Cité des Ondes event on video and electronic art kicks off Blank Field, a program of experimental music curated by Francisco Lopez (aka “that blindfold guy”). Highlights this week feature a performance by Japan’s king of noise Merzbow on Tuesday, Sept. 17, and Australian guitarist Oren Ambarchion on Wednesday. Show starts at 7:30 p.m. sharp at 2000 St-Antoine E. (corner de Lorimier, metro Papineau). Tickets are only available at the door one hour in advance and are $5 each (capacity is limited to 150 people!). :

Center Records inauguration this coming Wednesday at 5129 St-Laurent! Be there!
