Toronto trio Boygina pump indie rock full of hot, sticky fun
by RUPERT
BOTTENBERG
Copping their tag from gay porn synonym-du-jour for “manpussy,”
Boygina bust out catchy, lo-fi, nerd-punk nuggets like “Do Anal,”
“Tight Pants” and “Mange Moi Maintenant” (delivered
phonetically, as they’re from Toronto). Obviously, sex is an overriding
fixation for the trio of drummer Shannon McNally, bassist Timothy Muirhead
and guitarist T. Dick. The topic is tackled in a variety of positions,
without compromising the giddy, goofball grin factor at any point. They’ve
got an album out, produced by no less than Can-con oddity Dale Morningstar
(“Dale likes the sex talk,” says Dick, “so he liked
us.”), and they’re headed this way for a bill with T.O.’s
Slutarded (fuck, they should give Junos for excellent band names like
these). The Mirror got Dick and Muirhead on the line together and, once
the credit card was cleared and the 18+ status confirmed, probed and
prodded for some insights.
Mirror: Do sex and silliness
go together?
Timothy Muirhead: I think so-in my life, they have.
T. Dick: Most of my sexual experiences involve
laughter of some sort.
TM: This is sort of personal, but I giggle every time
I achieve orgasm. I can’t help it. I’ve had girls give me
weird looks.
TD: Give Tim a couple of minutes, he could whip it
up for you.
M: Uh, no, that’s
alright. Do you think that indie rock has desexualized rock ’n’
roll?
TM: Indie rock is either really overtly sexual or without
sexuality at all. There’s no middle ground.
TD: Asexual indie rock-I’d have to agree to that.
Corduroy is not very sexy.
TM: But the vertical lines have a slimming effect.
TD: Tim says corduroy’s sexy, T. Dick says no.
It’s a holdover from whenever, when what people wore in the audience,
they wore on stage. We dress up. It makes a big difference in terms
of the attractiveness of a band. At the beginning, we had themes for
each show. We had thematic costumes, but it became too challenging so
we gave it up. We did primary colours, we did school-kid uniforms, we
did St. Valentine’s and all wore red.
TM: I wore hot pants once but that will never be needed
again.
TD: Then we did the basic black with white belts-until
everyone started doing it. So we got all creative and went all white.
M: Despite the rude title,
your song “Do Anal” seems to show a sensitive side to Boygina.
Or am I just being played for a patsy here?
TD: No! We’re very sensitive. It’s a sweet
sentiment, going that extra mile for the one you love. We’re gonna
have to write a Part 2 to it, though, because everyone does anal these
days, or at least it seems that way with Chatelaine running how-to reports.
So we’ll have to write “Do DP”-double penetration.
M: Hey, who’s beatboxing
on “In 2 U”?
TD: That would be Tim, the most talented member of
the band. He can beatbox and play bass at the same time-you’ll
have to come to the show to see it. :
