Show nuff!

by SCOTT C

What’s goin’ on?! Here it is, the end of the summer, and all of the sudden we’ve got shows for days. Never mind all the student dollars that have very quickly re-established the pole-position in the city, where was all this shit a month ago? Because all I do is complain, I’ll just run it down for you. Heads up for one of the illest lyricists to bless the mic with ease as J-Live touches down in MTL for a show at le Studio on Friday, Sept. 13. The Seven Heads Records affiliate and former schoolteacher is all about dropping knowledge in all the right places, with style. He’ll be joined by our own likeminded Butta Babees as well as DJ Spazmodik. $12 in advance. On Saturday, Sept. 14, you can check out Winnipeg hip hop pioneers Mood Ruff when they do their thing at le Swimming, or you can head down to Cabaret for the Stones Throw Showcase featuring Peanut Butter Wolf, Madlib and Egon, plus Simahlak and Alex Hustle. The Stones Throw boys haven’t been here in a minute, but they always get the nod ’cause they know how to bring it! This little do is to signal the release of Stones Throw’s new piece Peanut Butter Wolf’s Jukebox 45s. $15 in advance. San Diego mainstay DJ Greyboy makes his way back uptown to la Sala Rossa on Wednesday, Sept. 18, where I’ll be joining him on the decks for a midweek throw-down. Last time he was here, he not only found some furniture to add to his collection, but he also met a girl. Ahhh, Montreal-city of love and Bauhaus loveseats. $10 in advance. The next night, Sept. 19 that is, you can make your way down to Therapy at Jello where the lovely Alma Horton will be singing live. You may recognize Alma’s pipes on tracks like King Britt’s “Happiness,” or more recently 4Hero’s “Hold It Down.” Do not miss.

After a week like that, the last thing you need is another doozy to knock you on your ass, but the Def Jux tour will probably do just that. You can roll with El-P, Mr. Lif, RJD2, Soul Position, Cage and Copywrite on Friday, Sept. 20 at Rainbow-ites, as all are scheduled to perform that night.

Welcome back, students, hope you enjoy your stay. Those of you with keggers on your mind should steer clear of me if you don’t want any trouble. Yushi, stay up, man. Meditate on that, and we’ll use it in the studio soon enough. A special goodbye goes out to my man John Juan who got bumped at the U.S. border last week. He isn’t a terrorist, but they still won’t let him go home. Good luck in T.O., dude. Big hellos go out to Sam, Nathan, Robert, Gusto, Nadine, Elena, Leroy the Masochist, Numbers, Spunt, Mario and last but not least, Shambhala. :

All decisions should be made in the span of seven breaths…
