For four months, Britain’s Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust tracked the movement of a Light-bellied Brent goose named Kerry. Hither and yon, Kerry bleeped her migratory habits via satellite through Northern Ireland and across the ocean to the Canadian Arctic. Then Kerry moved from Bathurst Island to Cornwallis Island and came to a halt. Concerned for their pet project, researchers turned to an area wildlife conservation officer to go see what was keeping the bird grounded. Kerry’s transmitter signal led the officer to the home of an Inuit man—an Inuit man’s freezer, to be more specific, where Kerry lay dead and awaiting her marinade. The man admitted that he shot Kerry at the end of July.

There was some good to come of the incident, though. Explaining they now had “evidence that these Light-bellied Geese are hunted for food in Canada,” the WWT hopes to acquire an international protection agreement covering the birds’ known flightways. :
