Stop the madness!!

by SCOTT C

Like the true nerd that I am, I was about to check my e-mail at around 3 a.m. after a long, hot and sweaty Sunday, when I heard a crazy argument happening somewhere in the vicinity of my apartment.

After a few minutes, I paused for a second and arched my neck to the window to try to make out what was being said, but there were no longer any voices. Only seconds after the silence, I heard new voices yelling in what I quickly realized was the alley behind my house. I walked to the balcony in my underwear to see what all the noise was about, and swallowed hard when I saw a man lying face down and motionless in the centre of the alley about 100 feet from my place. The cops were there about a minute later flanked by a couple of concerned neighbours. One man was shoeless and shirtless and had obviously been startled from sleep by the ruckus, while the other man was armed with a baseball bat and seemed to have witnessed the whole thing. My guess was that one of these two had called 911.

Several more police cars arrived, and even from where I was standing, I could tell things weren’t looking good for the unmoving man. The ambulance came and went, and eventually, I went to bed. The next day I learned that the man had been shot no less than four times, and had died as a result. The dude had been shot right there! I’ve since been racking my brain wondering how in the hell I never heard the gunshots along with the argument. Shit is crazy, and a rather unfortunate way for me to get my priorities straight. Time is short, and you never know, so make the best of it.

On a much lighter note, you’ve probably already clued into the fact that Cream is back this year, perhaps a little smaller, but no less ambitious. The Aug. 31 show at the Molson Centre has Nelly and his St. Lunatics boys running the stage. It’s gonna get hot in therre! Also on the same bill are Detroit’s Slum Village, set to open up the night. SV’s new album Trinity drops this week, and you can check out the record release party at Blizzarts this Friday, Aug. 16 with Brass Knucks.

Busybody DJ Lexis is starting a new two-step weekly at Bluedog on Tuesdays that will feature the talents of Rockit. Lexis is highly underrated and is definitely worth checking out for some authentic UKG flavour, so mooove! Sase 1, Corey K and Krinjah also unleash a new one, as they dig in at Saphir every Thursday from here on. D&B is king upstairs, while the KOPS crew holds down the main floor with hip hop and reggae. :
