Big Bang theory

>> DJ E-Man imports a piece of NYC’s
happening house nights

by PETER LIGHTBURN

From their humble beginnings in lower Manhattan, the Bang the Party events have defied the odds to become one of New York City’s foremost rump-quakers. At the heart of this five-year-old institution, which has bounced around locales throughout Manhattan and Brooklyn, is the dynamic partnership of Eric “E-Man” Clark and visual artist Lorie Caval-who have now hooked up with Montrealer JoJo Flores of Gotsoul for some party-banging up our way. DJ E-Man, whose calling card is his production of the soul-house anthem “It’s Yours,” took a break from making supper to chat with the Mirror.

Mirror: How did BTP evolve to where it is today?
E-Man: We got started in a small venue in the Lower East Side, it was originally an R&B and hip hop night that was very successful. I was approached by Lorie to do another night, because she knew I liked house music. Starting out, it seemed there were all these protocols I didn’t understand-size of venue, over-the-top systems, community boards. Me and Lorie stayed persistent and did BTP as we saw fit. We invited DJs that were our friends, changed venues at least 13 times and it eventually took off.

M: What is the state of health, in terms of the availability of venues, in New York City?
E: Not good-under the guise of the war on drugs, house clubs are prime targets.

M: What kind of vibe can one expect when you play here?
E: Pretty much the same as the last two times I came up there to play. Some deep, soulful, spiritually uplifting house music derived from the R&B and soul that has inspired me as an artist. Basically, a positive and eclectic vibe that will incorporate photo and slide shows involving BTP’s resident artist Jackson Brown. :

With JoJo Flores at Sisters on Saturday, Aug. 10, 11pm
