Hometown heroes

by SCOTT C

Looks like Montreal is representing internationally these days with all kinds of hometowners doing their thing in foreign parts. Last week, Heavyweight took a trip overseas to participate in the Royal Elastics Streetwise One art exhibit. The event, which took place at the APART Gallery in West London, focused on some of the artists responsible for the latest movement in urban painting in North America. Some of the other artists featured included Haze, Doze, Inkheads and the Barnstormers, all of whom are featured in a new film being produced by Montreal director Pablo Aravena called Next: A Primer on Urban Painting. He was also in London shopping a demo of the film and documenting/interviewing many of the participants of the show for the movie, set for release next year. Meanwhile, a little closer to home, my New York eyes tell me that our very own Bless ripped it this year at the Rocksteady Anniversary that took place last weekend in NYC. Apparently, the “Platinumberg Kid” showed no fear in bringing it to the hungry audience, and why should he? This was not his first Rocksteady appearance, and probably not his last.

Looks like all you nerds are gonna get your wish, as you’ll be happy to know that good ol’ Pharell Williams and his N.E.R.D. buddies will be taking the stage at this year’s Vans Warped Tour. You can check them out on August 16 at Parc Jean-Drapeau, but surely we can secure dem Neptunes for their own show while they’re in town, yes? I think so.

Local ruffnecks les Architekts take over les FrancoFolies tonight, Thursday, August 1, when they perform at la Zone Hip Bleue Dry. Back in full effect are Stratège and Ray Ray, joined onstage by the more than capable DJ Blast as backup. They’re also bringing extended family members O.L.1.K.U., Cobna and Blacksunz. The show starts at 8 p.m. and it’s free. :
