| Get out, get down >> There’s dance a–plenty in parks this summer by MARITES CARINO
Summertime always slows down the number of indoor dance shows going on around town. But out in the fresh air, there’s movement a-plenty. Now’s the perfect chance to take a break from stuffy theatres and get out to see some dance under the starry skies. As part of the summer dance series, Le Jeune Ballet du Québec animates the stage in the heart of Parc Lafontaine. The evening performance is a collaboration with the Escuela Nacionál de Danza Clásica y Contemporánea of Mexico. The two-part program features works by foreign choreographers such as Carlos Ovares of Costa Rica, Christophe Garcia of France and local artists Hélène Blackburn and Jane Mappin. Those waterslides on highway 15 are one of the biggest draws to St-Sauveur this time of year, and there’s even more to do this weekend. Music and dance are in the spotlight at the Festival des Arts de St-Sauveur, which wraps up on Sunday. Les Grands Ballets Canadiens was originally scheduled to perform a mix of works from their repertoire, but that’s changed. Instead, dancers will perform quirky Israeli choreographer Ohad Naharin’s Minus 1 in its entirety. If you haven’t seen this compelling work yet, the drive out is worth it. And if you’re in the mood for some flamenco rhythms, Aurora Flamenca turns up the heat with two free shows in to St-Sauveur’s Parc Filion. Has all the watching got you restless? Hike up the mountain to Beaver Lake on any Monday night until Aug. 26, where l’Association Montréalaise des arts et des traditions populaires offer free folk-dancing classes for anyone interested. If you’d rather not participate, you can kick back on Thursday nights and watch others perform signature dances of countries around the world. : Le
