>>> July 25, 2002 American
With the proposal of the Terrorist Information and Prevention System by the U.S. Justice department, America stood to gain a sprawling army of quick-thinking, brave citizens to help in the war on terror. Citizens like Williamsburg, Virginia resident John Chwaszczewski, who spotted a helicopter landing in his neighbourhood and, in a burst of wild patriotism, opened fire on it with his trusty assault rifle. The fearless act caused quite a bit of unrest for helicopter pilot John Sutton, who was simply trying to pick up an area businessman. Chwaszczewski told police that his was a “natural reaction” for a citizen of post-9/11 America, saying he saw the helicopter coming down over his garage and immediately recognized the situation as “terrorism at its utmost.” Sutton
was charged with recklessly operating an aircraft, while Chwaszczewski
will face more serious charges of interfering with an aircraft, discharging
a firearm in a public place, reckless handling of a firearm and assault.
