Ali, Armand and the Kid

by SCOTT C

After trying to track down our favourite hometown export for an entire week, I’ve come to the conclusion that either he really doesn’t like me (likely), or the European machine has simply swallowed him up. I’m talking about Kid Koala, who although on tour in Europe right now, is set to do his thing in the bar at Sona this Sunday, July 21, as part of the clever, one-syllable hip hop weekly, Jaxe. The kid don’t fake Jaxe, and you know he brings it to you live, so make sure you’re there.

On Saturday, July 20, you can check out my favorite Ali G look-alike Armand Van Helden when he brings his boomin’ system to Aria for the night. You can razz this guy all you like, but you and I both know the room is gonna be filled to the brim with hot ting, and tart, all trying to get Mr. DJ to look their way. I’m sure it’s all business as usual to him, and he’s too busy playing records to notice these things anyway, right? Bring a camera.

Just checked the calendar for la Sala Rossa only to find out that Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings are scheduled for an August 20 date. This funk queen belts it out while the Dap-Kings dig in deep to get that groove you miss soooo much. I couldn’t think of a better place for this show, and I know that room is gonna bring out the best in the band. Mark it down now, ’cause if you miss it, you’ll be sorry.

Although Montreal graf pioneer Flow is a man of few words, he often says it best in his art and photography. On Friday, July 19, at 8 p.m., you can see what he’s trying to say when his show, Head First: A Photo Essay, opens at Noize (3697 St-Laurent). All you need to know is that this dude likes to play with trains, and I’m not talking about toys.

Still vibing off of their CBC Big Break win, Montreal hip hop group Offsides are gearing up for another party at the Vatican this Sunday, July 21. They’re gonna get on stage and do their thing, but they’ll get some help from DJs Don Smooth and Toddy Flores (where’s my Bilal LP, guy?) for the rest of the night.
