Finding a few good men to join the army has failed to impress some Portland, Maine, teens, who say recruiters belittled and insulted them for not wanting to enlist. Promises of money, college degrees and good times were made, but when the answer came back no, recruiters turned to other tactics.

“They told me I would be a ‘fucking bum’ if I didn’t join,” 19-year-old Lee Woods complained. Despite turning recruiters down over the phone, Woods was picked up and driven to a recruitment office, where a reason for his refusal was demanded. Finally, recruiters told him he was worthless and asked him make his own way home. Several others have reported similar experiences, but inquiries to the Portland recruiting offices brought no response.

“I understand we need an army,” said Woods. “But to humiliate me… and then throwing me out with no ride home is kind of a ridiculous recruiting technique. Don’t you think?”:
