Lettin’
’em by SCOTT C So let me just organize things here for just one second. I reckon it’s time we round up all the various Montreal hip hop projects, force them to finish up, and release it already. We need that shit right now! Adding a little fuel to the fire, I suggest that, if you know any of these people or see them in the street, you make sure to ask them when their record is coming out. It’s all about pressuring the artist into a sense that somebody is actually interested in hearing their stuff. You can start with DJ Suganeedlz. I mentioned last week that this Cypher Queen is set to release a 12” with NYC’s Poison Pen, but I didn’t say that she produced both the A and the B side. Then there’s DJ Mana, whose album Metamers is 92 per cent finished. He had to take some time off from recording to place second in the 2002 Montreal DMC eliminations, but if he doesn’t produce soon, we’re going over there. Oh, Simahlak, where is thy sting? Brass Knuckle and original billy goat gruff DJ Simahlak just jetted to Toronto to tie up some musical loose ends. He’s busy putting together his next release on Audio Research. Speaking of AR, where in the name of A-Train is the new Obscure Disorder single “The Grill”? Heard that joint while I was in Toronto in the spring, when Obscure was on the radio live with Non-Phixion. This song is a crazy summer joint , and as you well know, it’s already July. Quickly aging child prodigy MC Bless has squashed all of his competitors, silenced all of his critics, and has been pulling women twice his age since he was 13. He even recorded a track with Gangstarr’s Guru, but we ain’t seen nuthin’ yet. I know there’s been some tough breaks in the production of his LP (heads up, Ray), but people need to know that you’re gonna come through, kid. Throw us a bone! Y’all need to take a note from Halifax ex-pat Sixtoo, who only just moved here, but has the artistic output level thing locked down. You can check for cats like Bless and Sixtoo, as well as Patrick Bateman (I got beats for you), Killa Jewel and T.O.’s Theology III on the next volume of the Up North Trip hip hop compilation from Urban X-Pressions, due out this summer. Also, stay tuned for dates and info on ?uestlove at Sona in August, Guru without Primo in August, and a record release party for the new Slum Village LP Trinity: Past, Present and Future with the Brass Knuckles Crew, also in August. Shouts to everyone who came out to the Goods at la Sala Rossa last Saturday night. Good vibe, good people, good music. See you again on August 10. Lastly, do not forget to check out my own personal music mentor, Paul E. Lopes, the only DJ who really matters, at Jello tonight July 11. He’s the King! : She’ll be comin’ round the mountain when she comes... >> Music Listings |
