Can you dig it?

by RAF KATIGBAK

Summer fun is in full swing, folks. For many of us, that means barbecues, patio parties, break-o’-dawn benders and of course the ever popular Sunday afternoon crack-out sessions at the tam-tams. But Sundays on the mountain aren’t just a time to replenish that lost serotonin from a previous night’s festivities. For some it’s actually a day for getting up early (?!) and going to get some (gulp) exercise. I’m talking about the mountain bikers, rollerbladers, ultimate frisbee-ers and general health nuts that, for some reason, prefer something they call a “natural high” (if you think I’m talking herbal ecstasy, then I’d start worrying) over a night of teeth-grinding spinal-fluid depletion and irreparable hearing damage (go figure).
But beyond the casual “active person” frequenting the tam-tam jam, there is a certain breed of athlete that turns up the “hardcore” dial to 11. I’m talking about the volleyballers. I’m not sure why these dudes intimidate me so much (perhaps it’s because, unlike most of them, I’m almost legally midget-size and have the physique of a nine-year-old boy). Either way, as much as I’d like to join in their reindeer games, I think I just like partying too much. But now it looks like I can kill two birds with one stone. As some of you may have heard, from July 9–14, du Maurier Stadium will be filled with the crème de la crème of international volleyball stars spiking their way through the l’Internationale de Volleyball. Aside from the regular schedule of men’s and women’s teams facing off on the sand, at 8 p.m. this Friday and Saturday, Molson Dry will host some of Montreal’s hottest live acts and DJs. Friday, July 12, catch Les Jardiniers live followed by Misstress Barbara and DJ U-Nick. Saturday, July 13, catch the live percussion sensation Quicksound and DJ Alain Vinet. This may be the most successful music/sport crossover event since the Canadian Death Metal Badminton Championships back in ’83, so don’t miss it! Call Admission at 790-1245 for details.

Did somebody say DJ Sneak? I’m not sure about y’all, but Aria’s where I’m gonna be Saturday night. With props from everyone from Daft Punk to Basement Jaxx, you know his shit’s gonna be funky. If you like your house pumping, disco-y and fun, y’all gotta be there too!

Tonight, Thursday, July 11, drop by Exit as Fred Everything builds momentum on his soon-to-be-smokin’ residency at the new club on the block. If you don’t catch him Thursday, Mr. Everything will be on hand to celebrate the third anniversary of Destination Fridays at Jingxi with resident DJ Phil Larochelle and other special guest Nic B.

All the jungle massive, this is just a reminder that Summer Breeze in Da Jungle will be happening again this Saturday, July 13. Alongside the usual suspects, special guests will include Nicky Nutz (Old Skool Jungle, Belgium) David Florida (Simple Tings, Sophisticated Rude Boy, Ottawa) and DJ Saigon (Numb Clothing, Old Skool and New Skool Ragga, Toronto). Billeedat! Call 401-6774 for info. :
