Herbal remedy by SCOTT C I tried to flex some journalistic magic at the door to the Herbaliser show last Saturday night at Club Soda, and was received with a smile by a Jazz Fest rep whom I’ve spoken to on the phone many times. After scanning the list for Scott C and a party of three, she looked me dead in the eye, smiled and said, “Your name is not on the list. NEXT!” I gets no love, like Rickey D. Luckily, entertainment mogul Daddy Victor Schiffman arrived, distracting the guest-list people and the doorman with his hypnotic South African accent just long enough for us to hustle the gate. Once inside, we were able to enjoy the final show on the Herbaliser’s Something Wicked tour, a show where they pummelled the audience with multiple kicks and blows to the head. I walked away with a sore neck and ringing ears that had been boxed by the best. Later on that morning, I spoke with Herbaliser keyboardist and rising talent Kaidi Tatham (aka Agent K), who just released his own debut LP Feed the Cat on London label Laws of Motion. As a frequent contributor to the musical creations of Bugz in the Attic, Neon Phusion, Ne-Grove, Home Cookin’, 4Hero, I.G. Culture and many more from the exploding West London broken-beat movement, Kaidi was quick to confirm work on a project with Madlib from the Lootpack, something we could see as early as the fall. BRAZIL! Alright, I’ll stop. Were you really surprised? Not in the least. There’s still time for you to pick up tickets to People Under the Stairs, who take to the stage at Club Soda on Friday, July 5, for a night of inspired, old-school-flavoured hip hop. K and Thes One were supposed to share the stage with Smith & Mighty, who’ve now been replaced with U.K. hip hop producer and DJ Aim. Last I heard, Montreal hip hop DJ and radio personality DJ Suganeedlz was getting ready to do a track with NYC MC Poison Pen. What’s the scoop? Well, we’re gonna find out real soon. Don’t sleep. Almost forgot. Vinyl Magazine celebrates its five-year anniversary with Sweat 5 at Groove Society this Friday, July 5, featuring Majess, Eddie Lewis, Donald D, Whoo-Z, Smokey, the Soca Monarchs, Soul Contollers and many, many more. Info at sweat@slightlyillegal.com. Congrats to Jesse and Zeeta! : Seven
