in an >> With the Ether party, Kirk6 mix it up for the underground once again
Navigating the terrain of dance music is tough. Down every electric avenue of techno, drum & bass, house, and downtempo lies a prefix like ‘deep,’ ‘ambient,’ ‘hard,’ ‘organic’ or ‘progressive’ that twists the route into a labyrinth of subgenres. From pit boys and party sluts to cyber-hippies and candy kids, trying to keep up with the constant evolution and hybridization of the party-goers themselves is enough to make any graver’s glitter-soaked eyeliner run. Enter Kirk6, a young team of promoters trying to bring together what they see as a slightly segregated Montreal underground party scene. Famous for their Cloud parties (third place in the Best Party category of last year’s BOM, beating out other promoters with 10 times the budget), Kirk6’s events forgo the all-too-common “two sounds/two international DJ superstar headliners” pattern. They opt instead for a mish-mash of sounds, moving from electro and trance to booty and drum & bass, provided by the crème de la crème of local up-and-coming DJs. “We really want to next the whole party concept, pushing the envelope and trying to expose people to as much of the culture as possible,” says Nick Meletis, co-founder of the 10-member collective. “Not a lot of promoters are doing as much as they can to make their parties special, so there’s a lot of room for innovation.” With
a live-breaks set by DJ Slyde, an electro set with DJ Mini, a troupe
of 25 Afro-Brazillian drummers called Zuruba, a set by Baby Dino and
headliners Arkin Allen and Scott “Bucket Boy” Russell fresh
off their European tour, Kirk6 continue to rock the “quality and
diversity of local talent” steez with the Ether event scheduled
this Friday at Stereo. “Ether is a reference to old-school science.
It’s the stuff that they thought held the universe together,”
explains Meletis. “It pretty much sums up what we want to do next
Friday. A fusion of what we feel is some of the best talent right now,
in one of the best clubs in Montreal, with one of the best sound systems
in North America. It’s gonna be straight crazy.” : At Stereo on Friday, June 28, 1am, $20 |
