In the realm
of the senses

naw jpeg The pieces making up Joanne Hui’s first solo exhibit, Life Drawing Lessons, are somewhat synesthetic in nature—that is, they seem to grow out of a blurring of the senses. In this case it’s a meeting of the aural and the visual, with Hui transforming the sounds of her surroundings into organic, floral (and mineral) drawings and watercolours. If you too become inspired after checking out the show, you’re invited to take part in a “collectively authored drawing garden” where you can contribute your own extra-sensory impressions and paint a little something yourself. The show’s part of the MAI’s Ménage à trois project, which links up the gallery with graduate student artists from Concordia and UQÀM. Three more artists will be featured as part of this program, which will run throughout the upcoming year. At the MAI (3680 Jeanne-Mance) July 3–27. :
