As some of you may have heard, Montreal is about to say goodbye to one of its preeminent musical ambassadors. I’m not talking about Ti-guy the Tap Dancing Midget, but a hardstepper of another, taller, kind. Over the last decade, Double A (aka Aaron Siegner) has come to be recognized as a lynchpin in the Montreal drum & bass akimbo jpegcommunity. Back in tha day, alongside current Dune Recordings partner Twist and DJ friend Krista, his jungle party promotion team (aptly named Jungle Jungle) were the first to bring in the cream of the U.K. junglists, from LTJ Bukem and Grooverider to DJ Rap and Kemistry & Storm. The Session, which he spun regularly at Purple Haze, was a personal favourite haunting ground of yours truly, and his residencies at Angels and Jai Bar continued the tradition of bringing cutting-edge drum & bass to this predominantly house town. As half of the Dune production team, his 12”s have got props from tastemakers (Fabio, Grooverider) and critics (Mixmag, URB, Muzik) alike, and his Dune/Nude label is still finding great success today.

Now, alas, all good things must come to an end. After years of service, representing Montreal drum & bass from coast to coast, Europe and Japan, Double A is returning to the land from whence he came—Halifax. But there is still time to say adieu to this pioneer of Montreal D&B. Show some love at Big Love 3 tonight, Thursday, June 27, at Stereobar. Double A will drop a very special set, going through the entire 12-year history of drum & bass in chronological order (so all you ol’-skool junglists and hardcore rave fans best show up early for the bombs). Prepare to be schooled. It kicks off at 11 p.m. and will cost ya just five bucks. Add to that drink specials all night and even a free mix CD to the first 10 people—if that don’t entice you then you better check your pulse. Represent!

Friday, June 28, check out the grand opening of X-cit, a brand new after-hours on St-Laurent (not to be confused with the similarly named Exit). Okay, so it’s one street south of the 40. Technically, it’s still St-Laurent. Despite the slightly budget, puke-a-licious flyer in circulation, the club boasts a great resident in the form of Miss Akane from Buenos Aires. Expect a solid night of hard, groovy techno to take you way into the 10 a.m. slot. 8386 St-Laurent, doors open at 2 a.m., call 807-8429 for more info.

Oh yeah, did I mention international DJ superstar Paul Oakenfold will be at Aria on Saturday, June 29? Bling. :

I’m gone sent into outer space, find another race…
