Productive protest

A year after the Summit of the Americas in Quebec City, Luca Palladino of CKUT and Cumulus Press publisher Dave Widgington have put together Counter Productive, an exhaustive CD/book project covering issues raised by the Summit protests. According to Palladino, “The idea is to get the message of resistance out and to try to look at that resistance from a critical perspective as well.”

The book features writers, artists and activists from both the Americas and Europe. There are tons of photos, collages and stamps, an excerpt of Perimeters, a play by David Fennario, and seven essays with topics ranging from police brutality to the experiences of a front-line medic. The CD showcases spoken word, audio collages, reportage, a play in five voices, and a speech about Plan Columbia by refugee Manuel Rozental. “When I listened to the sound recordings from the Summit, it sent shivers up my spine,” says Widgington. “Some of the pieces on the CD definitely bring you back.”

Events at L’X (182 Ste-Catherine E.) include an art exhibit from May 5–8. On May 7, at 8 p.m., the cast of CKUT’s Harvey Christ Radio Hour will preside over an exorcism of capitalism and imperialism, aided and abetted by The Money Shmoney Show with V. Station I.D. and L.M. DuBlah. The May 8 Counter Productive launch at 7 p.m. features singer MHMD, spoken word artist Kaie Kellough and DJ DXTR X. Info: 522-5404. :
