One-minute moves

Imagine seeing 23 mini-choreographies in the same number of minutes. This is the concept behind Short Works: 23 by Crystal Pite, the resident choreographer at Les Ballets Jazz de Montréal. This work, Pite’s second choreography for les Ballets Jazz, is part of the company’s 30th anniversary show, Light-Time-Open Space II.

“What was happily revealed to me during the work was that movement speaks,” says Pite of her work. “There are no props in this piece, it’s a bare bones production. The body speaks volumes. I had worked so much with lights, text, bells and whistles. I was affirmed by its simplicity—but I think my next piece will have lots of gadgets and wigs.”

Short Works: 23 is the first work in a trilogy by Pite, who has danced with with Ballet B.C. and Ballet Frankfurt. Pite’s long-time collaborator, composer Owen Belton created the soundtrack. Also on the Light-Time program are works by Patrick Delcroix, Mia Michaels, Charlotte Griffin and Trey McIntyre. At Théâtre Espace Go (4890 St-Laurent) April 4–14, 8 p.m., $26. Info: 845-4890. :
