A bug’s life

After having studied classical dance, acrobatics and mime, interpreter-choreographer Jocelyne Montpetit found her calling in Japan with butoh. In the land of the rising sun, Montpetit worked with the founders of this Japanese dance form, Kazuo Ohno and Tatsumi Hijikata.

Making its world premiere in Montreal, Montpetit’s La Femme des sables is based on a short story that features an insect-woman by Japanese author Abé Kôbô. Montpetit translates the story into movement lit by lighting wizard Axel Morgenthaler. These two artists have collaborated numerous times in the creation of visually stunning works; in this choreography, Montpetit wraps herself in the skin of this eccentric creature and takes us on a stroll through the sands.

And if you’ve got any questions, the public is invited to stay past curtain call after the March 14 performance for a discussion with the choreographer. At L’Agora de la danse (840 Cherrier) March 14–16, 20–23, 8 p.m., $16–23. Info: 525-1500. :
