Women on the move

Go out and celebrate International Women’s Day this week (officially, Feb. 8) at local dance space Tangente (840 Cherrier), which opens up its stage for the annual Sa Geste event, featuring women in the spotlight.

Sarah Joy Stoker kicks it off with Je ne peux pas. Her last work was a social commentary on the state of the environment, but this time Stoker looks to within for inspiration. A dancer with Newfoundland roots, Stoker confronts her fear of fear itself in this piece, which uses video by herself and French videographer Fred Vaillant.

Next, in her work which fuses dance, voice and percussion, ex-O Vertigo and Carbone 14 dancer Mireille Leblanc presents her most recent creation La Dérive. Dancer Michèle Bastien joins Leblanc in this journey where dancers’ movements are translated into sound by electro-acoustic artist Jean-Frédéric Messier. Sa Geste runs at Espace Tangente from Thursday, March 8 to Sunday March 11 at 8:30 p.m. (except for the Sunday show, at 7:30 p.m.), $13–15. :
