Angel >> CERAS The Centre d’études et de ressources sur l’asie du sud held two vigils this week, one on Sunday and another on Wednesday, condemning last week’s outburst of sectarian violence in India. For years, CERAS has been active in condemning both persecution of religious minorities in India—Sikh, Muslim and Christian—while denouncing the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the fundraising activities by its affiliates, notably the World Hindu Congress, among Indians living abroad. Towards the end of the month CERAS will be screening a film about religious violence in India by Indian director Anand Pathwardan.

Insect >> Hidden ATM fees A report released this week by Industry Canada’s Office of Consumer Affairs warned users of no-name bank machines to watch their habits. Hidden fees, infuriatingly referred to as “convenience” fees and “network access,” can sap as much as $3.50 off a $20 withdrawal. What’s worse, about a third of all ATMs are now generic, popping up like usurious rats in bars, hotels and airports. The Royal Bank and the CIBC are also considering similar fees for non-clients. Consumer advocacy groups are predictably outraged and are calling for fee caps.
