Foam is where the art is

One Gargantuan Optimistic Metaphor, a new installation at Oboro (4001 Berri, #301), evolved out of artist Naomi London’s contemplation of what happiness is. Huge upholstered foam letters ring the gallery space, spelling the word HOPE in English, French, Hebrew and Arabic. All those pieces of foam furniture are tempting—can gallery viewers just jump on them? “Well, hmmm, I’m not sure,” says London. “You can definitely sit on them and move them around. These objects were made in the spirit of humour and playfulness, as well as having a possible function and interactivity.”

So, if you’re suffering from mid-winter depression, go to Oboro, take off your slush covered boots and do some cathartic lounging on a big pile of HOPE. If no one is looking, do a couple of swan dives and you might just, as London hoped, start feeling pretty darn happy.
One Gargantuan Optimistic Metaphor shows through March 23. Info: 844-3250. :
