If having the every one of the 79 original Star Trek series episodes on DVD thrills you, then this is your week. The folks over at Paramount have released them all, with spanking new packaging and in gorgeous new digital format. Lord knows, all those who worship the show have probably worn thin their VHS copies, so here’s their big chance to re-experience the joys of consuming more Trek merchandise.

Each disc contains two episodes with their original TV promo spots, which are quite fun to watch. And it’s almost a relief not to have endless commentary by someone involved who isn’t really interested in doing the commentary in the first place (as in at least half the DVD commentary tracks I’ve heard). Cripes, I’m still recovering from Shatner’s commentary on the otherwise-excellent DVD for The Incubus.

My fave Trek episodes are still “Mudd’s Women,” “Amok Time,” “Mirror, Mirror” (didn’t Nimoy look great with a beard?) and the genuinely spooky “What Are Little Girls Made Of?” I had nightmares about this last one as a kid.

Ingmar Bergman buffs will want to take a look at Light Keeps Me Company, an excellent doc profile of Oscar-winning cinematographer Sven Nykvist. Among the film’s revelations: like Sinatra, Woody and Andre Previn, Nykvist had a thing with Mia Farrow too. :
