Bengali spice

Skin and steel are the focus of choreographer-dancer Roger Sinha’s new show Loha+Thok. The duet Loha, which means steel in Bengali, works with juxtaposition of both the flexibility and rigidity of steel. Sinha performs this piece with contemporary Indian dance interpreter Natasha Bakht. This is a Montreal premiere, as it was performed in Ottawa last year.

Thok, meaning skin in Bengali, makes its world premiere at the same time. Dancers Tom Casey, Sophie Lavigne and Lucie Vigneault wear percussive bits of metal on their bodies and are accompanied by rhythms and music produced by on-stage musicians Ganesh Anandan and Rainer Wiens on electric guitar and traditional Indian instruments.
If you should have any lingering questions post-show, after tonight’s (Feb. 7) performance, there’s a question-and-answer period with Sinha himself. In the lobby, be sure to check out the works of painter Anne Thibault that took inspiration from Sinha’s choreographies.
At L’Agora de la Danse (840 Cherrier) Feb. 7–9, 13–16, 8 p.m., $16–23. Info: 525-1500. :
