Pre-Socratic studs

Jake Brown has always shown a remarkable ability to spin elaborate theoretical frameworks from the most unrelated things imaginable. Take his upcoming lecture on the moral philosophy of women’s fashion magazines, in which he claims to have found certain elements of the pre-Socratic concept of hubris.
“These magazines seem to espouse a form of hedonism, materialism and romanticism in the oldest sense of the world,” Brown says. “They’re all about trying to become God, and trying to control nature as well.”

Brown will share the stage with the mysterious spoken word personality Stu Pository. According to Brown, “He refuses to give me any autobiographical information, except these three facts: ‘I’m fat, I’m from Toronto, I don’t like Montreal.’ He’s been described as a Generation X Studs Terkel.” The show also includes musical interludes by the vivacious Janet Apple Red. It’s all happening at the Jupiter Room,

3874 St-Laurent, on Saturday, Feb. 2, 9 p.m. $5. :
