Neighbourhood watch

In the late 19th century, Barcelona’s Sants neighbourhood was a major industrial centre, dominated by massive textile factories (owned most notably by magnate Joan Güell, patron of famed Barcelona architect Gaudì). Though its industrial days are long gone, you can check out the old neighbourhood’s unique character at the Écomusée du fier monde’s new exhibit, Le Jardin mécanique, Barcelone-Montréal.

A visual comparison of Sants and Montreal’s own Centre-Sud, the exhibit consists largely of juxtaposed photos and illustrations of the two historic, working-class neighbourhoods. Like Centre-Sud, the predominantly Catalan Sants retains a strong local identity. At 2050 Amherst through Sept. 15. :
