God love Quentin Tarantino. Without him I never would have discovered Switchblade Sisters, a Jack Hill film from ’75. (Tarantino has rereleased the film on his own label.) This film has some downright nasty young chicks take each other on in brutal rivalry after some surly boys mess with their heads. There are some truly hilarious sequences in which our antiheroes prove how tough and vile they really are. Suffice it to say, sugar and spice these girls are not made of. But best of all is an utterly bizarre shootout that occurs at—of all places—the local roller rink! Is nothing sacred? Keep an eye out for the poor plump girl whose Jezebel sisters have cruelly nicknamed “Donut.” She’s played by none other than Kitty Bruce, daughter of standup legend Lenny Bruce.

Jeepers Creepers and Ghosts of Mars are both out on video this week, sad reminders of how desperately bad horror movies have become. (Really, someone’s got to raise John Carpenter from the dead.) I mean if they were truly bad, that would be good, but they’re just banal bad. If you’re looking for sheer predictable cheese, I recommend dining on The Glass House (also out this week), an idiotic, jump-through-the-hoops suspense thriller that managed to sate my appetite for braindead moviewatching. Beware of substance-abusing, power-tripping foster parents! :
