Gypsy jam: In conjunction with Mariko Tanabe’s multidisciplinary dance show Encendillas del Alma Pura (Jan. 18–20 at the Église de Gesù, 1200 Bleury), two bilingual lectures will be exploring the fascinating pastiche of Andalusian culture and music. Jan. 15, Dr. Nina Bennahum speaks on The Gypsy Body and the Moorish, Jewish and Catholic Cultural Mosaic of Spain and Albert Millaire will read some poetry. Then, on Jan. 16, Dr. Dinah Sabbah talks about Andalusian Influences on Traditional Jewish Music and Georges Ansellem reads the poetry. The Montreal Andalusian Orchestra will perform at both events. Both at the Bibliothèque nationale du Québec (1700 St-Denis), 7 p.m. • Let the sunshine in: The World Social Carnival is a fundraiser to help get a local delegation to the next Forum Social Mondial in Porto Alegre, Brazil.
