Best of the fest

JAs many a Torontonian will gleefully point out, in its 25 years the Toronto International Film Festival (formerly the Festival of Festivals) has become a real big deal on the festival circuit, competing for influence only with Cannes and Sundance. This month the Cinémathèque québécoise pays tribute to the mega-fest with its exhibit Brave Films, Wild Nights: 25 Years of Festival Fever.
It’s one of those two-faceted shows that the Cinémathèque is so good at, with a display of posters in the building’s exhibition space and a selection of notable films playing in the theatre. The exhibit features the psychedelic ’70s art for Tarkovsky’s Solaris, which is an amazing poster, even if displaying it is a little cheeky considering that the 1972 film didn’t actually premiere at the fest, but was shown there over a decade later as part of a retrospective. Still, it’s nice to look at. The poster exhibit runs through Feb. 3, and the movies show through Jan. 13. :
