>> The Bookmobile Project spreads the word

by MARK SLUTSKY

The Projet Mobilivre-Bookmobile Project is by all means an ambitious one. Basically a travelling exhibit of around 300 artists’ books, zines and independent publications, all housed in a vintage 1959 Airstream trailer, the Bookmobile zoomed across eastern North America blowing minds earlier this year, and will soon be on its way again. “We go to all sorts of places—schools, libraries, artist-run centres and collective-run houses,” says Leila Pourtavaf, one of the project’s Montreal coordinators.
The Montreal-originated collective does more than just show the books: they also hold workshops along the way, teaching folk to make their own stuff. “We hope to disseminate work to a wider audience than the regular art-going public,” adds fellow coordinator Onya Hogan-Finlay, “and encourage people to make their own bookworks and zines and keep independent media alive and thriving.” Submissions are now being taken for the Airstream’s next voyage—the deadline is April 1, and info can be found at www.mobilivre.org. :
