Getting personal

>> Patrick Coutu’s life imitates art, or vice versa
by CHRISTINE REDFERN

Since Patrick Coutu graduated from UQÀM in ’97, he’s been a busy man with regular exhibits all over town. He was in the group shows Artifice in ’98, Compulsion in ’99 and Oasis this past summer. He also had a solo exhibit at Galerie Clark in 2000. “The subject matter of my work is often my personal relationship to art making,” says Coutu. “Spatial themes act as metaphors for the place of art in my life.”
Known mainly for his installations and photographs, Coutu really spreads himself around. “This past fall at Studio Cormier, I dug in the ground and found Cormier’s old garden,” he recounts. “Next September, I’ll be in a group show of watercolours in Paris at Galerie Glassbox.” Closer to home, we’ll have ample opportunity to see Coutu’s work: a large photographic fresco of his will go up this month at Galerie B-312, and he’ll be part of a group show at Dazibao in April. Then, to top it all off, he’s got a solo show lined up in June at the Musée du Québec. :
