>> Kinga Araya explores identity through
performance

by CHRISTINE REDFERN

“I’m starting a large artistic project, called Hubris, between Canada and Poland,” says Kinga Araya of her ambitious plans for the new year. “Three shows in Poland will go conceptually with an exhibition in Montreal—I definitely consider this a major step forward in my work.” Araya is known for her performative sculptures, video and performance art. Originally from Poland, her own experience as an immigrant informs her work. She often uses simple things like walking and talking in her performances to examine identity, migration and language.
Grounded, a performance where she appeared to have three legs, was released this month on the DVD Alphagirls (www.alphagirls.ca), apparently the first purely artistic DVD to be released in Canada. Araya’s video, ABC, will be showing at La Centrale in February, Hubris will be at Galerie Christiane Chassay in May and Grounded will be part of La Centrale’s Mois de la performance next November. As Araya puts it, “This is a really good year—I’m scared and excited at the same time!” :
