Angel >> Remembering executed soldiers Veterans Affairs Minister Ron Duhamel this week added to the Book of Remembrance the names of 23 Canadian soldiers who were executed during the First World War on charges of cowardice and desertion. The move acknowledges that the men volunteered to fight for their country, but doesn't pardon them for breaching military discipline. Duhamel said that the soldiers, had they served today, would have received better treatment, which today's peacekeepers and even WWII soldiers enjoyed. Veterans groups are hoping for an Act of Parliament that would officially pardon the soldiers, victims of an unforgiving time.
