Power to all people
by Christine Redfern
In 1973, a group of artists started meeting at each other's studios to discuss their art. Together they approached some of the commercial galleries on Sherbrooke for an exhibition and felt they were turned down because they were women. In response, they opened Powerhouse, a women's artist-run centre that still operates today as La Centrale Galerie Powerhouse. Powerhouse: Who we are now is an exhibition of current self-portraits by the founding members. According to Pat Walsh, an original group member, "There was something suspect about a group of women together. People can't believe now what women came up against then."
Walsh recalls the time an application was made to receive Canada Council funding for Powerhouse. She still sounds amazed when she says, "We were turned down because--and I quote--we 'represented too small a minority of the population.' They could still get away with saying things like that then. A lot of young women artists today do not realize this history. They think things are okay, they don't know what's waiting for them. There are still biases and glass ceilings, they just aren't so obvious." At 7:30 tonight (Dec. 6), there will be a discussion on women in the arts, led by Pat Walsh and Gail Bourgeois. Exhibition and lecture at McClure Gallery (350 Victoria, Westmount). Info: 488-9558.
Sex appeal
by Sholem Krishtalka
Even when exhibits deal with eroticism and sex, somehow they're seldom sexy. In putting on Compositions 1, The Echophilia collective (Andreae Prozesky, Shana Lapenskie, Maria Kennedy, Reiko Waisglass, and Kai Fierle-Hedrick) have assembled something of a sexy show. The exhibit explores overlapping of bodies and space, of selves with nature, of text and image. Photographs, written or typed text and artist's books are all exhibited side by side. In terms of presentation, this overlapping makes it difficult to pinpoint exactly what the show is--instead of a straightforward installation, it feels like walking into a giant artist's book.
The show seems surrealist in nature and very sensuous, since the works are extremely evocative even if it sometimes feels as if the physical relation between text and image could be better resolved. However, there is a lush, erotic gorgeousness to all the elements which makes this is a show worth seeing. At 372 Ste-Catherine W., #328, until Dec. 14. Vernissage, Dec. 7, 7 p.m.

Stop the violence
December 6, the annivesary of the Polytechnique massacre, is the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. To mark this day, Studio XX, CKUT, the NFB, the South Asian Women's Community Centre, the Mouvement contre le viol et l'inceste, and Choeur Maha present Sounds Like Peace, "a musical intervention in three parts." The event will also focus on two more attacks on local women: the 1998 murder of Milia Abrar in Angrignon Park and the beating of Katerine, the 17-year-old found near Vendôme metro in a coma. At 6 p.m., live musical performances will kick off within Angrignon metro and in Angrignon Park, as well as in CKUT studios. At 6:45 p.m., the choir will once again raise its collective voice at Vendôme metro. For part three, at 7:30 p.m., everyone will meet at Studio XX (338 Terrasse St-Denis) to finish off with more singing, a theatrical reading and a film screening. Info: 283-7315.
