Adios, Mike Harris Ontario's Premier and top creep Mike Harris announced his resignation Tuesday, six years and two back-to-back electoral victories after his so-called "Common Sense Revolution" ushered in a wave of tax cuts, hospital and school closings and dangerous slashing of environmental regulations. Claiming "personal reasons" for his abrupt departure, wags whisper about his attempts to salvage his marriage, which was on death's door following revelations he was diddling a Toronto TV personality, growing criticism of the Dudley George and Walkerton affairs, Ontario's sliding economy, and the Tories' rapid slide in popularity. He won't be missed by many.

Terrorists as diplomats Quebec's International Affairs Department's appointment of Michelle Duclos, convicted in 1965 of plotting to blow up the Statue of Liberty, as the province's rep in Algeria seems a striking error in judgement. A militant separatist in the '60s, Duclos was arrested for transporting dynamite to New York. She received a suspended sentence and was placed on probation after she agreed to testify against her former comrades in arms. An assistant to Louise Beaudoin, Quebec's International Affairs minister, said the conviction is "old history." Maybe, but landmarks blowing up in New York are still on some people's minds.
