Painted Peru
by Mark Slutsky
The Moche aboriginals of Peru might not have the sensational fame of the Incas who succeeded them, but they were a complex culture with a rich and intriguing system of belief. Starting this month, the Pointe-à-Callière museum (350 Place Royale), in conjunction with several Peruvian institutions, will be showing Mysteries of the Moche du Pérou, an exhibit composed of over 140 original artifacts from the vanished culture which peaked at the base of the Andean Cordillera over 1,200 years ago. The exhibit, largely composed of intricately painted ceramics with both social and religious functions, runs until March 24 of next year.
