Ramble on
by Christine Redfern
Karen Spencer is a performance art anarchist. Her month-long performance Rambling Man has nothing to do with the white walls, invitations and schedules of galleries. It is pure, unadulterated interaction between her and the public. Everyday she takes the metro to a different stop, then starts walking and singing the refrain of the song "Rambling Man," by Dickey Betts. She gets lost, then finds her way home, performing all over town, but never telling anyone where.
"Initially, the concept for the performance was about refusing to be seen and how this related to the gallery because the gallery is all about being seen and being presented in a space," says Spencer. "I thought the actual rambling would not be so important, but it is. I am so amazed by the images of Montreal I see everyday." Artist talk and document of Rambling Man will be presented this fall at Articule. Info: 842-9686.
