Jumping Jack Frost springs into action
by KRISTA
Question: Who is Jumping Jack Frost? Is he a super-powered Christmas figurine, a cunning action hero or a world-class drum & bass DJ/producer and incredibly suave ladies' man?
Though the first two descriptions might seem to more aptly fit the name, the answer is actually the latter. JJ Frost, as he is more commonly known, is part owner (along with Bryan Gee) of V Recordings, globetrotting ambassador of drum & bass and professional Casanova.
"You got me!" the infamous Frost cries over the phone. "I'm blushing! But it's not like that, y'know, it's all biscuits and gravy, man, it's all gravy!"
Of course, Frost wouldn't want you to get the wrong idea here. His reputation for being a bit of a party animal sometimes overshadows his talent as a DJ (thus the "Jumping" in front of the "Jack Frost"). But Frost is still one of the more sought-after DJs in the world of drum & bass, playing regularly at the U.K.'s largest clubs and festivals as well as at hundreds of gigs around the globe. But deep down he's really just a chill guy with a good sense of humour who likes to look at the ladies.
"The name really means nothing." Frost explains. "It's from an old kid's story. I've had it since I was young. But my friends don't call me that. I have a code name, though--it's Raymond or Raymondo. There are about 10 of us and we all call each other like that when we get together," he laughs.
Frost is currently on tour to promote Finetuning Vol. 1, his mix CD on local label Dune, and he will be at Jaï Bar on Sunday to drop a few bombs and "get grimy" as he calls it. After all the travelling is done with for a while and Frost is settled back at home, he plans to revive a sleeping dragon. "I'm going to re-launch Philly Blunt Recordings when I get back home," Frost confides, his voice taking on a more serious tone. "I think it's that time again, to put a little bit of jungle and a bit of that jump up and down shit back in the mix. Things in drum & bass have been a bit dry lately."
With Double A at Jaï Bar on Sunday, Sept. 9, 10pm, $10
