Picture perfect

by Genevieve Paiement

A veritable photographic virus is spreading across the city, with pictures sprouting up and taking over metro stations, art galleries and other public spaces. The name of this highly contagious and eye-catching disease: Le Mois de la photo. Its mischievous mission: to showcase photography from around the world and promote public interaction surrounding the art. Its method is manifold--vernissages, exhibits, conferences and artists' talks combine to paralyze (or at least attract a second glance from) the average citizen. This year's theme is Le pouvoir de l'image, exploring how exactly photographs exert their mesmerizing power over us.

With over 40 venues housing the works, 18 countries participating and 150,000 visitors expected, the event lasts over a month, from Sept. 7-Oct. 21. From the strange and colourful large-scale snapshots up now in the Berri-UQÀM metro station (in conjunction with VOX and France au Québec/la saison), to the myriad shows at the Maisons de la culture across town, it's a visual trip. Then there are the striking gallery shows, like Evergon's show Margaret & I, consisting of nude portraits of his elderly mother (at Galerie Trois Points, 372 Ste-Catherine W. #520, Sept. 8-Oct. 13). Or photographer and psychiatrist Emmanuel Stip's snapshots and those of his patients (at Mdlc Rosemont Petite-Patrie, 6707 de Lorimier, Sept. 7-Oct. 14). Info: 390-0383 or www.moisdelaphoto.com.
