A new porn dawning?

by MATTHEW HAYS

Watching You Are What You Eat, the debut porn feature from the Montreal-based production house Taboo Distribution, one wouldn't get the sense it's going to change the world. There's lots of sex, much of it anal, between various men and women. There's a paint sequence in which a threesome spread a can of it all over themselves and each other. There's grunting and moaning and facial cum shots. And the opening sequence has sex in a moving limo (even between two women!).

Not too earth-shattering, by my standards (not that I watch a lot of straight porn or anything), but to porn impresario Jonathan E. Bond, a 23-year-old entrepreneur, You Are What You Eat is the beginning of the end of the Canadian adult-movie scene as we now know it.

"In the U.S., this is a $10-billion a year industry," he says. "Canada doesn't touch one per cent of it. In order to be able to touch that percentage, Canada has to make itself known as an individual. And we've got to put out at least one movie every two months."

Porn industry types in Canada, he says, are treated like "garbage," in stark contrast to their counterparts down south. "In L.A., people will get hit by a car crossing the street trying to get the autograph of a porn star. Here, they're not treated like that. We have to start acting like stars in order to get treated like them."

Which led Bond to his lavish launch for the film, to be held this Friday, Aug. 31, at Video and Boutique Sexxx Plus in Ville St-Laurent (1805 Poirier from 7-11 p.m.). Bond will be joined by much of the cast of his first film to celebrate its hitting the stands. (Those who can't make the launch can join the gang at Stereo after 11 p.m.)

Bond says he wants to pull up the standards of the industry. "We've got nothing to be ashamed about. I'm not selling crack on the streets. I'm paying my taxes. There's no shame to this industry."

But it still doesn't quite answer the question: how is this film different from a lot of the other porn out there? "Ours is more gonzo," Bond insists. "Too many of the films are just plain fucking. Our actors are acknowledging the cameras. The camera is known as Mr. Glove." As well, Bond appears himself in the film as a running commentator, offering up various witty epithets and pithy one-liners. But he rules out getting into the onscreen sex himself: "The minute I become a stunt cock, I lose respect within the industry."

And Bond says he wants nothing more than to please his customers. "What do people want to see in porn? Lesbians, midgets, whatever, give us a call and let us know, we're totally open to anything!" Bond can be contacted through www.007erections.com or at 409-2HOT in order to vote for your own style of populist porn.
